Global Compact
The Global Compact is an international initiative that unites the efforts of various stakeholders, aiming at a more sustainable and comprehensive global market.
This voluntary initiative was firstly suggested at the 1999 World Economic Forum, in the speech of the United Nations General-Secretary Kofi Annan, and began its operating phase in 2000 at the UN headquarters. It is currently a network comprised of thousands of companies, national and international business associations, international labor union bodies, entities, business schools, socially responsible companies, governments and UN agencies.
Searching for the 10 principles inclusion within the companies’ strategy, the Global Compact has as policy that participant companies should communicate on an annual basis the progresses made in the implementation of actions which contribute to the Compact´s strengthening.
The 10 principles are:
Human Rights Principles
1. To respect and protect the human rights;
2. To prevent human rights violations;
Labor Rights Principles
3. To uphold the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining;
4. To eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
5. To abolish child labor;
6. To eliminate the discrimination in respect of employment and occupation;
Environmental Protection Principles
7. To adopt a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
8. To promote environmental responsibility;
9. To stimulate environmentally friendly technologies.
